The love that I have for
the descendants of African people is as wide as Tyra
Banks' forehead
The love that I have for
Black people is as down home as mixed greens and
cornbread
I love my people like young
people love Wu-Tang or Tupac
And my cup runneth over yet
I won't spill one drop
Because nothing can stop
the love that I have for the vast diaspora of Black
people
I love my people like I
love biscuits and grits
I love my people harder
than Mike Dyson hits
I love my people deeper
than a James Brown split!
Ow!
I love every morsel of my
people like that best tasting barbecue chicken
wing
Eaten down to the bone and
picked cleaned. You know what I
mean?
I love than more than I
love to hear Sade, Mahalia, Laurn Hill or Winams
sing
My love runs deep from the
low-low to the wild-wild
From those who pose in Land
Rovers to the ones who place transfer passes through
the turnstyles
From the projects to the
bourgeois Blacks in Bronzeville, Chatham, Hyde Park,
Richton Park, Country Club Hills, Pill Hill,
Wrigleyville- all colors, shapes, classes and
profiles
From the no class to the
low class to the mo' class
To those with a whole lot
of pizzazz and that jazz
Don't even ask do I love my
people. I love them with a passion that can't be
measured
Even from the
improvisational notes blown by
Miles!
The love that I have for my
people is as full as deep rivers flowing from my
soul
As powerful as the
Mississippi or the illustrious Nile so don't put me
on trial
If I converse about some
degree of my discontent
I may share a few
idiosyncrasies relating to how or where our money is
spent
I may articulate spiritual
or political allegiance
Or have a few philosophical
disagreements
But this doesn't keep me
from making good sense
Because after the dust
clears you will never have to question where my love
went because I love my
people
The sun rises on the good
and the evil; I pray for all
people.
(You may say that after
seeing some of our sisters and brothers act up in
public
That this expression of
love is unreachable or
unbelievable)
Let me make this moment
that's teachable
Yes I know the Spirit is
color blind; my love for all people is
genuine
Jesus shed His blood for
all mankind.
But since God chose to
place me around faces that look like mine and my
ancestors' legacy is a surviving light that
shines
I think it's time somebody
said, "I love my people! I love to hug my
people!"
Whether you are light skin
or blue black, I love the fact that we are
descendants of African
people
I love my
people!
